OPEC’in en büyük ikinci üreticisi Irak, doğalgaz ve elektrik alanlarında İran’a daha az bağımlı olmak için Fransız Total şirketi ile iki yatırım projesi hakkında görüştü.
Irak Petrol Bakanı İhsan İsmail, Bağdat’ın batısında ve Basra’da iki yatırım alanı oluşturulması için Total yetkilileri ile görüştüğünü açıkladı. Konuyla ilgili daha fazla detaylı bilgi verilmedi. Total halihazırda Irak’ın güneyindeki Halfaya petrol sahasında %22.5lik bir alana sahip. Ayrıca Kuzey Irak Kürt Bölgesel Yönetimi sınırları dahilindeki Sarsang keşif bölgesinde ise %18lik payı elinde bulunduruyor.
2018 yılından beri İran’a yönelik ekonomik yaptırımlar uygulayan Amerika, Irak’a Tahran’dan elektrik ve doğalgaz ithalatını durdurması noktasında baskı kuruyor. Bağdat’ın enerji alımı konusunda Beyaz Saray, Eylül ayında 60 günlük muafiyet tanıdı. Nihayetinde ise Irak’ın İran’dan doğalgaz ve elektrik alımını kesmesi bekleniyor. Bu sebeple de Bağdat, Total şirketi ile görüşerek temel enerji ihtiyacının giderilmesini hedefliyor.
