Amerika’nın Terörle Mücadele Yöneticisi Kash Patel, The Wall Street Journal’ın haberine göre 2020 yılının başlarında Şam Yönetimi’nin hapsettiğine inanılan iki Amerikalının salıverilmesini görüşmek için Suriye’ye gitti.
Donald Trump’ın yardımcılarından ve Ulusal Güvenlik Konseyi’nin Terörle Mücadele Yöneticisi Kash Patel, Şam Yönetimi ile mahkumların bırakılması için gizli bir toplantı gerçekleştirdi. 2010 yılından beri ilk defa Beyaz Saray’dan bir yetkili, Şam yöneticileri ile görüştü. Kash Patel’in toplantı sırasında kiminle görüştüğü açıklanmadı.
Şam Yönetimi ile görüşmeler hakkında bilgi sahibi olan bir Amerikalı yetkili, Mart ayındaki görüşmenin çok ileri gitmeyen bir toplantı olduğunu ifade etti. Şam Yönetimi’nin söz konusu görüşme sırasında sıklıkla Amerikan askerlerinin Suriye’den çekilmesini talep ettikleri belirtildi.
Amerikan yönetimi, Esad’a bağlı yetkililerle görüşerek, iki Amerikalı mahkumun bırakılmasını umut ediyor. Mahkumlardan biri olan eski Deniz Piyadesi ve gazeteci Austin Tice, 2012 yılında Şam yakınlarında ortadan kayboldu. Amerikalı yetkililer, Austin Tice’ın hala yaşadığına inanıyorlar. Suriye asıllı Amerikalı doktor ve yardım görevlisi Mecd Kemalmaz, 2017 yılında Şam Yönetimi’ne bağlı askerlerin kontrol noktasında durdurulduktan sonra kayboldu. Şam Yönetimi’nin elinde en az dört Amerikalının daha mahkum olduğu düşünülüyor.
Donald Trump, Mart ayında Beşar Esad’a mektup yollayarak, Austin Tice’ın bırakılması için yardımcı olmasını dile getirmişti. Amerika, Suriye’deki vatandaşlarının bırakılması için çeşitli yolları deniyor. Bu konuda Lübnan’dan yardım almaya çalışıyorlar. Lübnan İç İstihbarat Şefi Abbas İbrahim, 2019 yılında Amerikan vatandaşı Sam Goodwin’i dünya gezisi sırasında mahkum edildiği Suriye’den kurtarmıştı.
Suriye’deki mahkumların bırakılması için çalışmaları CIA yürütüyor. 2017 ve 2018 yıllarında CIA yetkilileri birçok defa Şam’a giderek başta Beşar Esad’ın yardımcısı ve Ulusal Güvenlik Büro Şefi Ali Memlük ile görüştü. Şam’daki yetkililer ise CIA’in görüşmeler gerçekleştirmesi sebebiyle ellerindeki mahkumların CIA çalışanı olduklarına inanıyorlar.
Kash Patel geçtiğimiz günler Yemen’deki Husilerin elindeki iki Amerikalının bırakılması karşılığında iki yüzden fazla Husi’nin serbest bırakılmasına dair bir anlaşma yaptı. Mahkumların serbest bırakılmasını Donald Trump, seçim kampanyası olarak kullanıyor. Suriye, Hindistan, Venezuela, İran ve Türkiye’den getirilen Amerikalılarla görüşen Trump, bu kişilerle olan görüntülerini mitinglerde kullanıyor.
